Moments of Nature from Svalbard

I am no video-photographer, but since I was surrounded by allot of these beautiful animals i could not help filming some of them and putting the clips together into a 7 min long compilation video of different species. Recommend you to watch it in full HD.

Polar Bear and Blood

A dense sea-ice forced our boat quite close to small island/reefs close to Blomstrand Island. There, suddenly we saw a Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) enjoying his recent kill. We then turned off the engine and just drifted by, before we left him alone. He did not seem bothered with us, and kept on eating. All through the day, the beer feasted on the seal.

Golden in the Arctic

This bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus), relaxing on an patch of ice, had some great colors.

These seals is the biggest of the true seals in these waters. They have long whiskers which curls when dry; therefore the name.

Svalbard Reindeers

Yes, again I was so lucky to work at the kittiwake colonies close to Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard (Spitsbergen) and offcourse; I brought my camera. This entry is all about the short legged Svalbard Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhyncus).

This reindeer is a subspecies of the mainland species Rangifer tarandus and you may only see this on Svalbard, where it appears everywhere the ground is not covered by glaciers. Often enough they come quite close to you.

Søndagstur (Sunday trip)

It is nice to have the time to just wander around in the forest from time to time.

Red Knots In The Thousands!

One "planned" part of my trip to the northern most parts of Norway, was to experience the Red Knots (Calidris canutus, Polarsnipe) in the thousands. This occurs every spring at almost the same locations each year. I was lucky to be in the middle of 15.000 of these beautiful birds.

The pictures does not give a good impression of the experience, but I include them still. =)

The picture above shows only a small portion of the total individuals present at this time.

A little macro

I am still working on my "macro skills". The light was quite good, but a bit dark so I had to use relatively high ISO.

Svømmesnipe (Red-necked Phalarope)

Just past midnight, I was lucky to observe the Red-necked Phalarope courtships and fighting in the midnight sun. In the small pond the lighting was quite challenging, but  it was a great experience nevertheless.
